Hedgehogs in Peril: One Woman’s Quest to Build a Hospital
As the hedgehog population continues to decline at an alarming rate, one charity is working tirelessly to rescue, treat, and rehabilitate these beloved creatures. Prickles in a Pickle, a small Hedgehog Rescue Charity located in South Devon, takes in over 1,200 hedgehogs every year, many of which are either orphaned, wounded, or sick.
Hedgehogs in need of care
The charity’s mission is not only to care for these tiny creatures but also to educate the public on how to encourage and look after wildlife in their gardens and surrounding areas. With the help of volunteers, Prickles in a Pickle works to release rehabilitated hedgehogs back into the wild, giving them a second chance at life.
A Heroic Effort
Sally Mutton, a dedicated supporter of Prickles in a Pickle, is going the extra mile to raise funds for the charity’s new hospital build. On July 29th, Sally will open her unique “recycled garden” to the public, showcasing her creative and environmentally friendly features, such as a polystyrene box waterfall and rainwater collection system.
A glimpse into Sally’s innovative garden
For a small entry fee of £3.50, visitors will be treated to a coffee, tea, or Pimms, accompanied by cake, while learning about the various components of Sally’s garden. The event will take place from 10am to 4pm, offering a fun and educational experience for all.
The Need for a New Hospital
Currently operating from the founder’s home, Prickles in a Pickle has outgrown its facilities and desperately needs a purpose-built hospital. With up to 165 hedgehogs in their care at any given time, the charity relies entirely on volunteers and donations to continue their vital work.
Caring for hedgehogs in need
A spokesperson for Prickles in a Pickle emphasized the importance of raising funds for the new hospital, stating, “Every penny we need to build this hospital will have to be raised. We cover a huge area of South Devon, and it’s essential we have our own hospital.”
