Senior Citizens Get Their Green Thumbs Dirty with ‘Home Grown’ Vegetables
In a heartwarming display of community spirit and determination, a group of senior citizens at the Bedford Community Senior Center have successfully harvested a crop of ‘home grown’ vegetables, grown using raised beds and five-gallon buckets in the center’s parking lot.

As reported in The Monroe News, the idea to have the mini garden came from seniors, who in the past have had gardens but are no longer able to because they live in apartments or have health limitations that don’t allow for digging, watering and other garden work. Volunteer gardeners at the center have taken on these chores and the center’s board members donated the beds, containers, plants and soil. The produce can be used by the members who planted the vegetables along with the center’s kitchen staff.
This innovative approach to gardening is just one of a variety of activities offered at the center and aimed at providing seniors with positive things to do. Last month, a free class was offered to learn American Sign Language, and other activities include fitness, yoga and Tai Chi classes, quilting, crafts and painting sessions, playing cards, bingo and trivia games, musical entertainment, bus trips and other activities. Throughout the week, for a $3 donation, the center also offers lunch.
The Bedford Community Senior Center is an excellent example of a community coming together to provide for its most vulnerable members. It’s heartwarming to see senior citizens getting involved in activities that bring them joy and a sense of accomplishment.

In a world where it’s easy to get caught up in our own lives and forget about those around us, it’s refreshing to see a community coming together to support one another. The Bedford Community Senior Center is a shining example of what can be achieved when people work together towards a common goal.
As we go about our daily lives, it’s easy to overlook the struggles that others may be facing. But by taking the time to listen to their stories and offer support, we can make a real difference in the lives of those around us. Whether it’s volunteering at a local community center or simply offering a friendly smile, we all have the power to make a positive impact on the world.
