Pickleball Advocates Push for More Courts in Westport
Pickleball enthusiasts in Westport are rallying for additional courts to accommodate the sport’s growing popularity. With over 680 members in the Westport Pickleball Association, the demand for more playing spaces is evident. Despite being touted as America’s fastest-growing sport by USA Pickleball, players in Westport are facing challenges due to a shortage of dedicated courts.
Tom Lowrie, an ambassador for the USA Pickleball Association, and Peter Krieger, a former president of the Westport Pickleball Association, are at the forefront of the advocacy efforts. They are advocating for new courts at key locations such as Longshore Club Park, Fairfield County Hunt Club, and Birchwood Country Club. The proposed expansion aims to address the current limitations faced by players, including shared courts, restricted hours, and weather-dependent outdoor facilities.

The advocates are not only focused on increasing the number of courts but also on mitigating potential concerns raised by neighbors. Noise pollution is a significant consideration, and the proposed solutions include the installation of sound barriers around the courts to minimize disturbances to the surrounding community.
Stantec of New Haven is actively involved in the Longshore Club Park Capital Improvement Plan, which includes provisions for the integration of additional pickleball courts. The collaboration between advocates, local authorities, and planning organizations underscores the community’s commitment to enhancing recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.
The push for more pickleball courts in Westport reflects a broader trend across the country, where the sport’s appeal continues to attract new participants and garner widespread support. As advocates champion the expansion of facilities, the hope is to create inclusive and accessible spaces that promote active lifestyles and community engagement.
