Green Thumbs Unite: Hull’s Orchard Park Gets a Fresh New Look
A community gardening project is sprouting up in Hull’s Orchard Park housing estate, and it’s all about bringing people together. The Postcode Gardener scheme aims to transform 50 sites across the area into thriving wildlife habitats, complete with planters, bird boxes, and mini meadows.
Local residents come together to beautify their neighborhood
John Pickles, project manager at Hope Allotment in Sir Henry Cooper Park, believes this initiative will foster a stronger sense of community in the local area. “Getting out in green spaces and connecting with others is vital for improving our physical and mental wellbeing,” he says. “I want this project to create a space for socialising and collaboration.”
The project is being supported by environmental group Friends of the Earth, the Cooperative Bank, and Hull-based food and fuel poverty charity EMS Yorkshire. To kick things off, a community event is taking place at Hope Allotment, featuring gardening activities like sunflower planting, paper pot making, and an adventure trail around the site.
Sunflowers brighten up the community garden
“We already have ideas about what we’d like to do to ‘wild the ward,’ but we are interested to hear local people’s ideas about what they want to see in their neighborhood, rather than simply imposing our own plans,” Pickles adds.
With the help of local residents, this project is sure to bring a fresh new look to Orchard Park and promote a sense of community spirit.
