In the heart of Prince Edward County, a unique initiative is fostering a love for gardening among the young. The Children’s Garden Award, organized by the Prince Edward County Master Gardeners, is now in its fourth year, and its impact is growing stronger with each passing season.

The award ceremony, held at Hagerman Farms, a 100-year-old farm on Loyalist Parkway, recognized the efforts of young gardeners who have been nurturing their green thumbs. The farm, with its sprawling acres of fields, provided a fitting backdrop for the celebration.

The contest, which began in 2018, encourages children to create and maintain their own gardens, learning valuable skills like responsibility, organization, and patience. This year, the award received entries from children aged six to 12, divided into two categories: junior (six to nine) and senior (10 to 12).

“The idea behind the contest is to create and plant a garden which must be maintained through the growing season by each participating child.” - Prince Edward County Master Gardeners

The winners of this year’s contest were announced at the ceremony, with Payden Guernsey, aged nine, taking the top prize in the junior category. Mabel Ray Richens, 12, was awarded the overall trophy for her outstanding garden.

The Children’s Garden Award is more than just a contest; it’s an opportunity for young minds to connect with nature, learn valuable skills, and develop a sense of accomplishment. As we celebrate the ‘Year of the Garden,’ this initiative serves as a shining example of how gardening can bring people together and foster a sense of community.
