The New Trend in Watermelon: Watermelon Fries
Watermelon has always been a favorite summer fruit, enjoyed in various forms like wedges, cubes, sticks, and balls. However, a recent social media trend has introduced a new way to savor watermelon: as fries. Heather Staller, the creative mind behind the blog ‘Happy Kids Kitchen’ and the author of ‘Kid Kitchen’, unveiled this innovative idea on TikTok. The video quickly went viral, amassing over 8.3 million views and sparking 5,700 comments.
To create watermelon fries, begin with a fresh watermelon, preferably seedless for convenience. Slice the melon into 1/8-inch thick slabs and then use a crinkle cutter or a sharp chef’s knife to carve out ‘fries’ that match the width of their thickness. After each slab, carefully remove the rinds from the fries using the chef’s knife. Don’t discard the rinds! They can be repurposed for watermelon pickles or added to your compost. Once all the watermelon is transformed into fries, arrange them on a platter. These crinkle-cut fruit fries are a guaranteed hit at any gathering, especially when served with a delectable dipping sauce.
A Delicious Dipping Experience
While the crinkle-cut fruit fries are delightful on their own, they reach new heights when paired with a flavorful dipping sauce. Staller kicks off her instructional video by whipping up a blender sauce featuring a carton of yogurt (plain or vanilla), three stemmed strawberries, and a drizzle of honey. In addition to this berry-infused option, other fantastic accompaniments for this hydrating and nutritious watermelon treat include Sweet Yogurt Fruit Dip, Maple-Mascarpone Dip, and Cream Cheese and Yogurt Fruit Dip.
