The Pickle on the Tree: A Christmas Tradition?
As I grew up, Christmas was always a special time in our household. We’d venture out to find the perfect live tree, even when we lived in Hawaii. Our decorations were a mix of new and old, with some ornaments passed down through generations. But amidst all the festive cheer, I never heard of the Christmas pickle tradition, which has become increasingly popular. It’s surprising, given my German heritage on both sides of my family.
What is the Christmas Pickle Tradition?
The tradition involves hanging a pickle-shaped ornament on the tree, and the first child to spot it gets a special privilege. Some families let the child open a present first, while others grant them an extra gift or the honor of handing out gifts.

The History of the Christmas Pickle
According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the Christmas pickle tradition began around 1880 when Woolworth stores imported and sold ornaments from Germany, including fruits and vegetables. However, it’s likely that the tradition was invented by a clever salesman to boost sales.

Before I close, I want to share a few pickle-related tidbits. Corey’s Pickles in Montgomery, New York, offers a pickle fundraising package for organizations. The Hudson Valley’s popular Rosendale International Pickle Festival is moving to the Ulster County Fair Grounds in 2023. And, if you’re looking for a fun Christmas pickle carol, I found an adorable video on YouTube.
